35+ Years of Experience Reveals Why Waiting Too Long Can Cost You Millions in Opportunity
Over the past 35+ years, I’ve had the privilege of helping hundreds of organizations launch, rename, refresh, and rebrand their companies. Some were ambitious startups. Others were well-established organizations preparing for their next chapter of growth. Many have become industry leaders in their respective markets.
One lesson has remained remarkably consistent throughout my career: companies rarely wait too long to market themselves—they wait too long to brand themselves.
That may sound surprising, but it’s one of the most common and costly mistakes I see business owners make. The irony? The longer they wait, the more expensive the transformation becomes. That “temporary logo” lasts a decade and beyond.
Nearly every startup follows a similar path. The founders are focused on launching quickly. Capital is limited, priorities are endless, and branding often gets pushed down the list. Someone on the team, a friend, or a creative platform creates a logo that’s “good enough.”
The conversation usually sounds like this: “We’ll use this for now and hire professionals later.” Unfortunately, “later” often turns into five, seven, or even ten years. By then the business has grown considerably. The temporary logo has become permanent.
The company has invested heavily in its brand across virtually every customer touchpoint, from fleet graphics, trade show exhibits, and building signage to product packaging, sales collateral, websites, vehicle wraps, digital advertising, social media, email signatures, presentation templates, uniforms, promotional products, business cards, and office graphics.
With the investment surrounding the old brand so enormous, rebranding now feels overwhelming.
Ironically, it would have cost a fraction of that amount had the company invested in its professional brand from the beginning.
Many business owners think branding simply means designing a beautiful logo. It doesn’t. A logo is only one visual expression of something much bigger.
Your brand represents your purpose, your culture, your promise and your reputation.
At BRK Global Marketing, we begin every branding engagement with strategy—not design.
Before a single logo concept is developed, we help companies define their WHY, their vision, positioning, target audience, differentiators, personality, messaging, and long-term business objectives.
Only then do we begin creating the visual identity. Because successful branding isn’t about making companies look different, it’s about making them unforgettable.
First impressions still matter and whether we admit it or not, people judge businesses visually.
Before they meet your employees…
Before they read your proposal…
Before they experience your customer service…
They see your brand.
If your company performs like a Fortune 500 organization but looks like it was created over a weekend, you’re creating unnecessary obstacles for your sales team. Professional branding immediately communicates confidence, credibility, consistency, experience, and quality.
The companies pursuing larger commercial accounts, national contracts, institutional clients, healthcare systems, municipalities, manufacturers, or private equity investment all face the same reality – perception influences opportunity.
One of my favorite parts of every rebranding project is conducting a complete brand audit. We gather every marketing asset a company has ever created and what we usually discover surprises everyone:
I’ve personally seen organizations using six different shades of blue and multiple variations of red without anyone realizing it. Individually, each piece looked acceptable, collectively, the company looked disorganized. The organization wasn’t communicating one company, it was communicating six!
That’s one reason BRK often refers to us as our clients’ Brand Police and Brand Ambassadors. We protect the integrity of the brand long after the logo is approved.
The world’s most recognizable companies understand something many businesses overlook: consistency creates recognition, recognition creates trust, and trust creates sales.
Think about brands like Coca-Cola, Target, Apple, Nike, or Starbucks, their colors never change. Their typography is precise. Every logo placement follows exact specifications, and every vendor follows detailed Brand Standards and Brand Guidelines.
Coca-Cola has its signature red. Target has its own distinctive red. Every application is managed carefully using PMS, RGB, CMYK, and HEX color standards. Nothing is left to interpretation.
So why should growing companies accept anything less? Professional branding isn’t reserved for billion-dollar corporations, it’s the very reason many of them became billion-dollar corporations.
A strategic rebrand may be one of the smartest investments your company can make if:
A successful rebrand isn’t about changing who you are, it’s about ensuring your marketplace finally sees who you’ve become.
One opportunity many business owners overlook is rebranding before preparing for an acquisition or sale. A polished, strategic brand signals maturity, professional management, consistency, operational discipline and growth potential.
Buyers invest in confidence as much as they invest in financial performance. A stronger brand often strengthens perceived value and helps position a company for a higher valuation.
At BRK Global Marketing, we believe in practicing what we recommend. Several years ago, we strategically evolved our own company and rebranded as BRK Global Marketing. It wasn’t simply about a new logo; it reflected who we had become: our expanded national reach, our broader strategic services, our vision for helping companies build brands that create long-term business value.
If we ask our clients to continually evolve, we should be willing to do the same.
One of the most rewarding parts of my career has been watching the companies we’ve branded continue growing for years—and often decades. We’ve had the privilege of helping organizations including Vannoy Construction, Century Contractors, Devon Creek Landscaping, Price Brothers, Inc., Thompson, Delta Mold, Caryl Mechanicals, Kingdom Enterprises International, RubberBond Solutions, Northeast Tool, Supporting Autism, New Chapter Alliance, Ballantyne Jewelers, Diversified Innovations, Benchmark’s LARK, Memory Makers and many others build brands that continue evolving as their businesses expand.
One recent example is Wikoff Color Corporation, a respected manufacturer with more than 70 years of innovation in the printing ink industry. As Wikoff celebrated its remarkable legacy, the company recognized that its visual identity needed to reflect both its rich history and its forward-thinking future. BRK partnered with their leadership team to strategically refresh the brand while preserving the trust and equity they had built over decades.
The result wasn’t simply a new logo—it was a revitalized brand system that better represented their innovation, culture, technology, and commitment to the future of the industry. Today, their refreshed identity aligns with the global organization they have become while honoring the heritage that made them successful.
That is what great rebranding should accomplish. It should never erase your history, it should elevate it. Branding Is Never About Looking Bigger
One of the biggest misconceptions about branding is that it’s about looking larger than you are. Trust me, it isn’t. It’s about accurately reflecting who you already are. A great brand creates alignment between your reputation, your people, your customer experience, and your visual identity. When those four things work together, remarkable growth often follows.
After more than three decades helping organizations transform their brands, I remain convinced of one simple truth: the best time to invest in professional branding is before you need it.
The second-best time is today.
Whether you’re launching a startup, preparing for rapid growth, entering new markets, attracting larger clients, or preparing your company for acquisition, your brand should never be an afterthought.
It should be one of your greatest competitive advantages.
At BRK Global Marketing, we’ve spent more than 35 years helping organizations discover what makes them remarkable and translating that into brands that inspire confidence, build trust, and support long-term growth. Because branding isn’t just about looking better, it’s about becoming unforgettable.
Discover Significance.
